There was a poem by Blake called A Poison Tree, which states what I have always believed. People aren't good because they are nice inside, but for selfish reasons to save themselves from eternal damnation by behaving good. So essentially we are selfish bastards.
So this brings forth a topic my good friend was discussing with me. This revolves around the current crisis in Pakistan, but the topic itself evolved from the depths of human despair and ignorance based on their misunderstanding of what it means to be a good person.
Rich people, poor people, ugly people, well people in general are not giving what they used to. i bet if you go around and ask they'll say something like "i gave to the poor people in Haiti" or "I bought those stamps the last time they came around." So what. Who cares what you bought and when you bought it, does that mean this current tragedy was inconvenient to you? Does this mean those people dying nowadays in Pakistan or those starving kids in Africa are being selfish by dying when you gave for Haiti or Katrina?
It shouldn't matter when and where it happens. You shouldn't feel obliged to give once and say that's your good deed for the day. you should give because you want to and its needed. Don't say things like "What would my 5 dollars do?", because there are so many people like you, that those 5 dollars mean a lot.
Don't be fucking cheap an disguise it behind an already sated moral conscience. I am fucking cheap, but I make no secret of it.
Don't be a fucker.
A Poison Tree
by William Blake
I was angry with my friend:
I told my wrath, my wrath did end.
I was angry with my foe:
I told it not, my wrath did grow.
And I watered it in fears,
Night and morning with my tears;
And I sunned it with smiles,
And with soft deceitful wiles.
And it grew both day and night,
Till it bore an apple bright.
And my foe beheld it shine.
And he knew that it was mine,
And into my garden stole
When the night had veiled the pole;
In the morning glad I see
My foe outstretched beneath the tree.
Peace.
