She saunters through the crowded floor. The people part like the Red Sea in front of Moses. Some do it deliberately, most just feel compelled by the person next to them. The process is slow, but noticeable...
It would be wrong to say that eyes followed her progress, because it was more like the entire room turned their head to watch her sashay elegantly towards an empty seat at the bar. The fight was then on to see who could grab the seat closest to her.
She doesn't notice.
Her dress hangs loosely around her should exposing bare shoulder. The light seems to be absorbed by her skin making her body practically glow. Men can't help but stare, while women begin to whisper amongst themselves.
She reaches the seat and without a glance at it, sits on it and orders a drink. Within seconds it appears by her side without so much as the slightest delay. The bar might as well have been empty when she ordered her drink.
The whispers reach her ears and she smiles. A confident smile, bordering on cocky, but arguably justified as she corsses her legs. A flash of bare, smooth thigh makes one man forget his wife for a second, while another decides its time to turn on his charm.
He saunters over, drink in hand and smile on face. He loses his nerve. He backs away.
She doesn't even notice.
Other men try to drum up the courage. In fact they start dirnking more, just to bolster their flagging egos in an attempt to reach that comfortable level of tipsiness required to take that dive and make a move on her.
She doesn't notice them either.
Drink finished, she starts to leave. Collectively men try to block her way in a way that isn't threatening. She just walks past, they are powerless in her wake.
Outside, she lights up. The brief flame illuminates a smiling face. For the first time in a long time, there isn't sadness in the eyes. maybe this time, the smile is just what it is. A smile.
It starts to drizzle.
She doesn't notice.
Peace.
